A cool slice of electro-funk, with a bracing backbeat, some nifty keyboard noodling and the scrape of a violin. Not exactly old school, but it will transform your boogie butt back a few years. Honeycut is a Bay Area band that relies a lot on sampling, turntables and other gizmo gimmicks (when I see “laptop” on an instrument list, it gives me pause), but you wouldn’t know it from their sound. I guess their approach is easy to pack in a van. Could they be the first band to do a WebEx concert?
Anyway, “Shadows,” a free track from the good folks at IODA Promonet, proves that in the right hands, machines can have soul.
