David Wilcox’s Follow-up to “Big Horizon” (Finally)

VistaDavid Wilcox’s output over the last few years has been, to be charitable, erratic. He made “Big Horizon” over 10 years ago, with the help of Jonatha Brooke and Jennifer Kimball of the Story. The blend of Wilcox’s warm baritone with their marvelous, slightly off-kilter harmonies made for one of the decade’s best albums.

He’s fallen off my radar since, partly due to an excruciating performance at Newport in 1996, when he spent more time doing a fevered New Age prayer-rap than playing actual songs. So I was pleasantly surprised to learn about his latest, “Vista,” which after a couple of listens I’m prepared to call a return to form.

Check out the title cut, available for free download from iodaPromonet. Be warned, however. If you thought Blender Magazine’s elevation of James Taylor to biggest wuss in the history of music was dead-on, you probably won’t like it. Stick to Simple Plan or your old Iggy vinyl records if that’s the case.
